Online retailers that use parcel delivery services and store customer data should have multiple layers of security to stop hackers gaining access to sensitive data.
According to Ian Shaw, managing director of MWR InfoSecurity, it is very difficult to build a network that is 100 per cent safe, but there are ways to tighten things up significantly.
Mr Shaw was speaking in the wake of an announcement by Sony that the personal information of millions of its PlayStation Network users had been misappropriated in a malicious attack.
To combat this type of breach, he stated, "the most important thing is an in-depth approach with multiple layers of security, so that even if there is a compromise, at worst it is only a partial compromise and ideally more sensitive information is protected [with] more details using an encryption".
The expert added that it is vital to have procedures in place to deal effectively with a suspected attack and be able to shut down avenues of attack at the same time as keeping customers informed.
