eBay users who are unfamiliar with the format should start off by sending inexpensive parcels for delivery services, according to an expert.
Phil Davies, managing director of Flogit4u, said one of the biggest mistakes people make is attempting to take on too much straight away after joining the auction service.
He added that it is important to research the nuances of online trading and not be afraid to ask questions when starting off.
"Learn the rules of eBay and play by them - check out individuals' feedback, see if they're top rated and what other people have got to say about them," advised Mr Davies.
Earning positive feedback is a good way of ensuring you have a good volume of sales, the expert added, while getting bad reviews can scupper a business.
The auction giant recently reported strong growth in its fourth quarter, with revenue increasing 35 per cent on a year-on-year basis.
