Mobile commerce breaks £7.5bn in 2012- myHermes Parcel Delivery News

A new study has revealed that mobile commerce generated £7.5bn in the UK in 2012, as more consumers use the mobile channel to buy parcels.

According to the latest IMRG-Capgemini Quarterly Benchmarking report, mobile sales grew by 300 per cent over the course of last year. A total of £62.4bn was spent online in 2012, with mobile accounting for 12 per cent of sales.

"While we are starting to see a leveling off in the growth of both sales and visits, one in eight sales and one in five visits were through mobile devices in 2012 and conversion rates continue to rise," said Tina Spooner, IMRG's chief information officer.

While the rate of mobile sales growth lost some momentum towards the end of the year, the study noted that sales via smartphones and tablets had increased by four per cent year-on-year.

Last week, eBay revealed that it anticipated mobile sales would generate revenue of more than $20bn (£13.2bn) in 2013.
